Rubavu District — Rwandan authorities have temporarily closed border crossings between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Rubavu District following growing concerns over the spread of the deadly Ebola outbreak in eastern Congo

The closure, which took effect on the morning of Sunday, May 17, 2026, was confirmed by Rubavu District Mayor Prosper Mulindwa, who said the measure was introduced to protect public health and prevent the virus from crossing into Rwanda

The decision comes after health authorities in DR Congo reported a new Ebola case in Ituri Province earlier this week. On Saturday, Africa’s disease control agency announced that confirmed infections had risen to 336, while the death toll reached 87.

Residents living near border areas have been urged to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary travel, and strictly follow public health guidelines. Authorities are also encouraging communities to quickly report anyone showing Ebola-related symptoms, including high fever, vomiting, unexplained bleeding, or severe weakness.

The border closure is expected to affect cross-border trade and daily movement between the two neighboring countries, particularly in busy communities around Rubavu and Goma. However, officials say protecting lives remains the top priority as health teams continue monitoring the situation closely.

Rwanda has previously been praised for its rapid response systems during regional health emergencies, and authorities say preventive measures will remain in place until the risk is assessed as under control.
