Three Nyanza Hospital Doctors Detained Over Alleged Negligence Linked to Newborn Death

Authorities in Rwanda have detained three doctors from Nyanza District Hospital over allegations of medical negligence that reportedly contributed to the death of a newborn.
According to local reports, the incident involved a pregnant woman who sought medical care at the hospital but allegedly did not receive timely and adequate attention. The baby was later delivered prematurely and died shortly after birth.
Sources familiar with the case indicate that the mother subsequently filed a complaint against medical staff working in the hospital’s maternity unit, prompting an investigation by law enforcement authorities.
The arrests come amid growing national concern over the quality of healthcare services in Rwanda. In recent days, President Paul Kagame publicly questioned health officials about cases where patients reportedly fail to receive timely care, sometimes resulting in preventable deaths.
He criticized delays and inefficiencies within the healthcare system, calling for urgent reforms to improve service delivery and accountability.
Following the complaint, the three doctors were summoned to Busasamana Police Station in Nyanza District, where they were taken into custody as investigations continue.
Hospital management has reportedly urged staff to exercise greater professionalism and vigilance in patient care, emphasizing the importance of timely medical intervention.
Additional testimonies from other patients have also raised concerns about delayed treatment. One individual claimed that his wife experienced significant delays before undergoing surgery at the same hospital, resulting in the loss of their baby and long-term health complications.
Authorities have not yet released an official statement detailing the findings of the ongoing investigation. However, the case has intensified public calls for accountability and systemic improvements in maternal healthcare services.
Observers stress the need for stricter oversight and improved response times in medical facilities to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
