As Rwanda and the international community mark the 32nd commemoration of the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi, the United States has reaffirmed its solidarity with the people of Rwanda, emphasizing remembrance, unity, and hope for a peaceful future.

In a message shared during this period of remembrance, a senior official from the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of African Affairs highlighted the importance of honoring the memory of more than one million lives lost during the Genocide Against the Tutsi. The message also recognized the courage of those who stood against violence and division.

The official noted that remembrance is not only about reflecting on the past but also about strengthening a shared commitment to unity, reconciliation, and the prevention of such tragedies in the future.

Reflecting on a personal visit to Rwanda, including memorial sites such as Nyamata and Ntarama, the official described the experience as deeply moving and educational. These sites stand as powerful reminders of history and the resilience of the Rwandan people.

“During this solemn time, we stand with the people of Rwanda in honoring the memory of the victims and supporting the journey toward healing and unity,” the statement conveyed.

Every year on April 7, Rwanda and the world come together to begin a week of remembrance, paying tribute to the victims of the Genocide Against the Tutsi while renewing global commitment to peace, dignity, and humanity.

The United States reaffirmed its continued partnership with Rwanda in promoting unity, reconciliation, and sustainable development, recognizing the country’s progress and its commitment to building a peaceful and inclusive society.

This period of remembrance serves as a meaningful opportunity to reflect, to learn, and to strengthen a collective responsibility to ensure that such tragedies never happen again.
